both mitt romney and president obama haveeen campaigning i the same battlegroun state. this time it's virginia where both men targeted the same group of voters. let's walk over to cnn's naon political correspondent jim acosta who's been out on the campaign trail wahingt' going . another dramatic da. virginia, virginia, virginia. pretty important place. >> that's right. a rare visit to washington for me. but it's good to be home, wolf. all politics is local. so it was no surprise to hear both candidates hit on national security themes today in their speeches in virginia. but the state is much bigger than that. it's really a republican firewall for mitt romney. in battleground virginia, both president obama and mitt romney pulled out the heavy artillery before a group of veterans, romney slammed the president for the massive defense cuts part of the fiscal cliff coming at the end of the year. >> it is still a troubled and dangerous world. and the idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable. and devastating. and when i become president
, president obama and mitt romney kicking their swing state campaign into overdrive. both charting from ohio to virginia, the state that could be the must-win in november. joining us now, chris cillizza, managing editor of post politics.com and peter alexander following the romney campaign. welcome to both. chris, first of all, how important is virginia? they've gone, both from ohio to virginia. they seem to be tag teaming it, the two weekends. >> reporter: yeah, i would say, draa, we've talked about this, the visits, where they spend their time is so carefully calibrated to spend it in media markets and states that they absolutely need. ohio, mitt romney, i think needs and is behind. virginia, i think mitt romney mitt romney needs and is behind. one thing to remember about virginia a state, before barack obama won in 2008 everybody the last democratic presidential candidate come win it was lyndon johnson in 1964. it's remarkable that we're talking about virginia in the terms that we are. there's been a big demographic shift with northern virginia a big democratic population. it is remarkabl
-language romney ads in nine states. it's another attempt to soften romney's image. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle class families. the difference is, my policies will make things better for them. he'sticking ufor idob that's kind of cool, isn't it? romney hopes this video will have an impact. but there's another video affecting romney's campaign in a very much bigger way. >> and so my job is not to worry about those people. i'll never convince them they should take personal respbity and care r r s. >>t is brutal. the hidden fund-raiser video where romney disparaged 47% of americans is not helping with swing voters. it's also hurting romney with his base. "the new york times" talked to a worker, kenneth myers, an unemployed republican from ohio. romney's cments didn't sit llh s. "the last thing, where he was going on about the 47% who are dependent on the government is hard to swallow. i think i'm part of the 47% he's lking about. but i don't want to be dependent on the government." that's a pretty good indation of where that commenhas taken this campaign. e a ais if ry'm
. what type of ground game do you see obama and the romney people virginia? host: both president obama and mitt romney in virginia today. guest: virginia has become a true battleground state. the campaigns are here every week. you have a significant level of enthusiasm for both of these candidates. people that are committed will turn out for these rallies. the numbers are not overwhelming because there are so many of these events. you are looking at thousands, tens of thousands of people at these events. michelle obama was here recently. she filled the auditorium. some candidates generate high levels of enthusiasm. think about sarah palin. she had a rally in fairfax four years ago. it was an energetic and a powerful rally in terms of people getting excited for her. host: jim from massachusetts. caller: i think basically the election it is useless. i see it all around the world. all these leaders will collapse all the world economy to start the world bank for the new world order. both of these candidates, all they do is play on everybody's ults. the supreme court made a bad decision. ho
journalists might say about it. that ad moves people and has an impact. i have seen both obama and romney suddenly tweak or change or drop language called out by fact checkers. ultimately, there was a decision there that it does not mean that much to us if we fix this. we will get less grief if we treat it a bit or change it on the margins, but the key things that move voters, such as, he apologizes for america or obama with that ridiculous thing about savings from the wars, and in the same breath he criticizes george w. bush for running wars on a credit card. he will say those on this one sentence after another without any sense he is contradicting himself. there is pulling there that says that is an effective line and moves voters. it does not matter what the actual facts are. that is when -- >> in that statement, he also said, fact checkers come to this with their own sense of thoughts and ideas and backgrounds. he is trying to redefine what a fact is. he is saying, there are no objective facts. it is to somebody else's opinion about what we are saying. it is kind of like redefining ap

't think the situation is that dire yet. they do acknowledge both inside the campaign and outside that they are losing and the main reason that the republicans in ohio point to is that romney doesn't really have a cohesive message and said this is why you should throw barack obama out and install me as president. the key issue is the bailout of chrysler and general motors that the president pushed through. they say romney hasn't been able to come up with a consistent answer to this and the obama campaign has been mmering on this. one republican i talked to put it very bluntly, a senior republican in ohio said that obama's advantage on the auto bailout is quote a kick in the balls for the romney campaign. you can't say it, so i will, but that's sort of a consist ebt criticism about the campaign that they haven't been able to develop a message about that. >> i got to hear you say it. that's good enough for me, peter. one thing that's interesting to me, from your reporting and i i know you spent a lot of time out in the field, that romney has a good ground game in ohio. knocking o
editor. welcome to both of you. joy, our current daily tracking polls have mitt romney not believing in polls now. that could change several times. what do you think mitt believes about swing states, and bear in mind that by the end of this segment his position on polls could have changed. >> exactly. you know what? i think the best story of the week really besides the sam jackson making an awesome ad about voting is this unskewed polls. have you heard about this, this website where became people on the right have been allowed to leave the planet -- >> like the bubble. >> they have entered the bubble and sealed it. if you reweight the polls where there are many more republicans than democrats and you live on a different planet, mitt romney is winning, he's way ahead, he has no gas. it's beautiful. it's a wonderful reality. i think mitt has decided to enter into that unreality because it's much happier there. >> dr. peterson, you don't really need to read the polls to know what's happening, do you? because rick santorum and virginia governor bob mcdonald are going to iowa, and chris c
, the romney people today. it appears to be an effort to contain the damage done by what you just said, cynthia, 47% disclosure they didn't want to disclose. let's listen. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle class families. the difference is, my policies will make things better for them. we shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. we should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job. >> who measures compassion by how many people are on welfare? who is the story man they're trying to argue with? >> they are trying to make a caricature out of president obama calling him the food stamp president. this reminds me of the story where the woman comes home, finds her husband in bed with his best friend and he says, honey, it's not as bad as it looks. you have the 47 -- >> is that a joke or true life story? >> i'm sure it's happened once or twice. you have the 47% remark with romney speaking and other people have said it, not just me, with complete conviction and passion, telling people what he really thinks. an
. but one of the big problems for romney is that 47% video which is being looked at time and time again, both in ads and on the news. and let me just also say though, that, you know, these polls are still a snapshot. things could change. i suspect they might well get a little closer in this race. people might say the momentum is going to go another way. but what is so interesting to me is what republicans that i know in washington are saying to me, and that is that their own polling shows trending moving away from romney in a very worrisome way. and that they think they're headed for a train wreck, unless something very surprising happens in some kind of rabbit or event is pulled out of a hat. >> before we go i have to ask you, governor. we've seen another poll that shows you leading rick scott in a hypothetical governor's race in 2014. are you thinking about it? >> i'm thinking about re-electing president obama and that's awfully important. we only have 40 days to go. that's what the focus needs to be. this is probably the most important election we have. i think the country is at a cr
job is not to worry about those people. >> reporter: looking to halt the damage, the romney campaign also out with a new ad. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle-class families. the difference is, my policies will make things better for them. >> reporter: as romney goes on defense, we asked him about the criticism from fellow republicans about his campaign. about those critics within your own party? will there be changes at the top? are you doing anything wrong? >> there are critics and cheerleader cheerleaders. we have people of all different persuasion. >> so, no changes? >> every day, there's improvements and messages that come out. >> reporter: but romney's moment, redefining the moment in a week ago. pressure for romney to perform on that debate stage against the president. you've been practicing. any nerves? >> i don't worry about the opportunity to be on the air and to face the president. he has his views. i have mine. >> reporter: the governor saying he's ready. some are calling that debate a do-o do-or-die moment. i want to take you back to that image. yo
4.5 points. yesterday both candidates holding rallies in ohio, crisscrossing the state, sometimes almost running into each other they were so close campaigning. mitt romney tried to brush back suggestions his campaign is faltering there after that "new york times"/cbs/quinnipiac poll showing him ten points down in ohio. >> i'm very pleased with some polls, less so with other polls. but frankly at this early stage, polls go up and down. i don't expect to get 100% of the vote. i know i'm not going to get 100%. i hope to get 50 plus percent and make sure that i become the next president. >> talking about all those polls yesterday, mitt romney cited gallup and rasmussen, a couple of national polls that says the numbers are even. >> wait, willie, i don't understand. why would he cite the gallup poll, which i would usually cite the gallup poll if i were a republican candidate because the gallup poll usually is a little more conservative. what's the current gallup poll looking like? >> well, there's the daily gallup tracking poll showing president obama up six points in the points. maybe
